Triangle Slide
The AWS Standard Terms and Definitions often refer to the largest triangle that can be inscribed in the weld bead. The calculation to determine this is intensive, so this triangle is approximated by the Lap model.

To approximate the largest triangle, two points are choosen to define the longest side of the triangle. For example, Theoretical Throat uses the ROP point and the undercut point. Then a line is drawn through the two points.

This line is then lowered until it is entirely below the surface of the weld*.

*Some measurements only check that the line is below the weld surface Right of the Projection.
